3690 is an online journal that features engaging research writing from first-year students at St. John Fisher. The journal’s premise is that working carefully with the ideas of others—in print and in conversation—is a crucial component of academic writing, and that undergraduates who have participated successfully in this work should have opportunities to share it with a broader audience. The journal will be useful for students entering St. John Fisher who are curious about what academic writing entails for incoming 199 students, and for writing faculty who refer to sample student essays when teaching the discipline-specific, challenging work of research writing.
At the end of spring semester, students may chose to submit their 199 research writing, and an editorial board of Fisher writing teachers selects a handful of those essays for publication. Essays are selected that feature the many successful moves, strategies and conventions of research writing. 199 Essays represent a wide variety of disciplines, from biology to women’s studies to political science, yet they have at their core an interesting problem, question or idea that they make sense of through grappling with the data and perspectives of others.
